The Wade Center

In June, 2023, Grandin Court Baptist Church sponsored its first mission team to The Wade
Center in Bluefield, WVA. Because of their strong sense of purpose and value to the
community, we returned this past June and conducted VBS during the day and work in the
community in the afternoon and evenings. It is our intent to continue this bond as well next
summer because of our love for the children and mission of The Wade Center.
The Wade Center was founded in 2005 and currently has 50 elementary students enrolled as
well as a waiting list. Their main goal is to alleviate hunger, poor learning outcomes, and
emotional stresses by families living in poverty. Approximately one half of the students are
minorities, and many are in foster care. It provides a safe, creative place for at-risk elementary
school children to receive after-school help with homework, reading and math skills, and
computer proficiency. Local professionals provide weekly classes in art and music as well as
devotionals. They provide after-school care and summer camp at no cost to families.
Opportunities for personal growth abound!
Most importantly, The Wade Center is more than a physical space. It fosters an environment of
love, encouragement, and acceptance through the leadership of its Executive Director, Betty
Brainerd, Justin Johnson, Missions Coordinator, and staff. Their devotion and love for the
children at The Wade Center is unshakeable. The children’s excitement and connection to the
staff is evident every day in their interactions. Our team felt this upon our first week in 2023.
That’s why we want to continue our partnership with The Wade Center and continue to impact
the lives of these children as well as their families in the community. GCBC is dedicated to
strengthen this bond that binds us together.
